Second Street Piano Dedication
On Thursday August 6 the Pottsville Area Development Corporation dedicated the most recent Street Piano in the City of Pottsville at the intersection of 2nd and Market Street. Skook Toones began in 2013 to encourage appreciation of music and the arts by placing community street pianos throughout the downtown area of Pottsville.
This project is headed by PADCO’s Aesthetics Committee charged with advancing PADCO’s agenda for the appearance and beautification of Downtown Pottsville through community improvement programs. Previously this committee orchestrated community cleanups to improve the appeal of our central business district.
Most recently the Aesthetics Committee has become increasingly involved with the West Market Street Improvement Project through which we hope to see Artistic Improvements throughout this important City Corridor.
“The West Market Street Project is an off shoot of the City’s Blight Initiative that has proven to be a successful tool in the Fight Against Blight.
Over the last year a great deal of groundwork has been put into place for the West Market Street Program and I am happy to see another project added to the Improvement of this corridor.” Jim Muldowney Mayor of Pottsville
“Pottsville Area Development Corporation have become involved in various projects for the improvement of the Central Business District. The projects that we work on are diverse, from providing low interest loans for business start-up and Façade Grants to Building owners to organizing downtown Clean-Ups and Beautifying the downtown with Artistic projects.” Joseph Pahira, PADCO President
In 2013 PADCO placed the first piano on this corner. That piano created hundreds of musical memories as passersby stopped to share their talents with the greater community.
This piano was donated by a local organization, painted by volunteer artists, tuned and repaired by Daniel Sponenburg, stored and secured by various local companies all volunteering their time and efforts. Skook Toones is a great example of how we can come together to make a project happen.
Those who contributed time, talent and capital included Daniel Sponenburg, Pottsville Moving and Storage, George Logathitis, Doris Kauffman and importantly the Student Artists who designed the piano; Gina Comfort, Maddie Consugar, Rebekah McClellan, Gabby Rolland, Bethanie Skuczas and Abby Young.
The funding for the Street Piano program is provided though contributions from the greater community. Anyone wishing to financially support the placement of the next Street Piano, which is planned for the Mahantongo Parking Garage, can do so by visiting the Street Piano Go Fund Me Site at http://www.gofundme.com/PottsvillePiano.
